Clubs and Extracurricular Activities

 4-H 
4-H provides an opportunity for enrichment to the curriculum in the areas of language arts and science. The 4-H curriculum is aligned with the language arts and science GPS standards. Membership is open to all 5th grade students and meets once a month. Club activities include learning to give an oral presentation, exploring different science topics, and contributing to the community through community service projects.
 Academic Recognition Ceremonies
(Quarterly) programs are held quarterly to recognize student achievement and parental involvement.
 Accelerated Reader
Accelerated Reader provides daily progress monitoring software created by Renaissance Learning for monitoring the practice of reading. Using this school-wide program, students are encouraged to read, take “AR” tests, and to meet their quarterly goals.
 CHAMPS 
Choosing Healthy Activities and Methods Promoting Safety involves a  partnership with the Rockdale County Sheriff’s department. CHAMPS is a 12-week program, hour long program for 5th grade students designed to encourage students to resist engagement into self destructive behaviors. Subject matter includes: drugs, alcohol, and tobacco prevention, swimming safety, gun safety, gangs, violence, and peer pressure.
 Chorus
Russell
Chorus is open to 4th and 5th graders who are interested in singing. The club meets once a week. Club activities include performances within the school as well as performances outside the school at various community functions.
 DUDES
(Dynamic Upright Dedicated Esteemed Students)
D.U.D.E.S. mentors boys in 4th and 5th grade. The club meets every third Thursday of the month from 2:45 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Club activities include field trips,life skills and decision-making skills training, mentoring discussions, and journal writing.
 Fabulous Falcon of the Month

Our Fabulous Falcon of the Month program recognizes the student of the month for displaying appropriate RISE behaviors. 
 Flying Falcons Tutorial Program

Flying Falcons is an after school student tutorial program used to help students with deficiencies in reading, writing, and math.

Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl
Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl seeks to prepare a book-loving team of 10 fourth and fifth grade students to represent C.J. Hicks at Rockdale's Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl, which is held at the end of January. This quiz-bowl-style competition pits the elementary schools against each other as the teams demonstrate their knowledge of the Georgia Book Award nominees. In order to be chosen to be a part of the competitive team, students need to read the current year's nominees for the Georgia Book Award and be dedicated to rigorous preparation for the competition.
 M.O.R.E. Before and After School Program 
After School
The MORE Before and After school program  provides quality child care for students before and after school. This tuition-based program offers a variety of curriculum-based and enrichment activities such as homework help, dance, cooking, physical education, arts and crafts, computer time, etc.

Beta Club
National Junior Beta Club is an honor organization that recognizes outstanding academic achievement,promotes strong character and social responsibility, encourages service to others, fosters leadership skills, and provides settings for students to develop strong interpersonal skills.
 Peer Mediators
Peer Mediator
Our Peer Mediator initiative trains students in the skills of conflict resolution so they can help other students solve problems. Membership is open to one boy and one girl per homeroom in grades 3-5. Interested students must complete an application from to participate as a Peer Mediator. The club meets one time at the beginning of the year for training and throughout the year during the school day for mediation sessions. Club activities include attending the training session on conflict resolution, friendship, empathy, problem solving, communication skills, and peer mediation.
 Safety Patrol

Safety Patrol develops leadership skills for our students. Membership is open to 4th and 5th graders. Club activities include monitoring hallway and cafeteria conduct and outside car safety under strict adult supervision.
 Student Council
Student Council
Student Council teaches students about the democratic method for making decisions that involve the entire school. Students who serve on the Student Council make decisions about school projects and listen to the ideas of classmates, while remaining fair and respectful to all students.Membership is open to one representative and one alternate per homeroom as well as four 5th grade officer positions. Students must be elected to these positions by their classmates. The club meets once a month. Club activities include contributing ideas to school-wide spirit days and various service projects.
 Technology Fair and Showcase

The East Atlanta Technology Fair and Showcase allows students to “showcase” technology based projects while sharing technology skills and knowledge with parents and other stakeholders.

 Young Ladies of Distinction
Young Ladies of Distinction
(YLOD) is an all girl's mentoring program designed especially for 4th and 5th grade girls and aims to address various issues our young ladies may be facing. Our goal is to generate positive self esteem, attitudes, self-awareness, and pride among a largely diverse student body.  Additionally, YLOD girls will benefit from many opportunities to participate in community service projects and field experiences.
